Staying healthy, being a mom and an entrepreneur(mompreneur) are three full time jobs but can all three be done at the same time? Sustaining a healthy lifestyle is very important especially when you are a mother and an entrepreneur. Your health is certainly your wealth and you need to be healthy and strong for your family and business.
Healthy living is vital that is why today I’m going to be talking about healthy living and how to stay committed to a healthy lifestyle as a mompreneur, sharing my recent struggles in this area.
Recently, since my move back to England especially during my first month back here, I wasn’t working out as much as I love to, for those who know me well enough, know that exercising is part of my life style.
On getting here I slipped up on some gym time .Don’t blame me, blame the cold in London which makes you want to lay up in bed, cuddle a cup of tea and just be cozy.
I however so missed my morning runs and strength training sessions at my gym in Lagos. After my personal struggles I’m glad to announce that I’m back, stronger and just started a new gym here in London which has got me feeling like myself again.
When trying to sustain a healthier lifestyle, it is important to pay attention to everything that enters into your mouth. While I was away from the gym, even though I didn’t exercise as much as I would love to, I tried not to mess up my body’s balance by eating super healthy and doing bits of indoor exercise.
One key factor to leading a healthier lifestyle is nutrition.
Eating a balanced diet is essential for maintaining health and wellness, especially for us women. From energy, to getting adequate vitamins and minerals, to preventing diseases, our food choices remains vital because you are what you eat.
For fitness geeks and healthy eaters like me, it can be extremely difficult cooking and eating as a family.
The kids (Adam and Asher) want ice cream, fries and burgers (Loads of it) . Sometimes the hubby wants a full uncontrolled portion of Jollof Rice or Eba (A Nigerian meal made from cassava which is super high in simple carbohydrates) served with Egusi Soup (Melon Soup). *Inserts my ”Oh my God, Man!” face.
So how does one stay healthy with these expectations , especially when you are the one making these foods?
THE FOLLOWING ARE A FEW OF MY TESTED AND TRUSTED TIPS TO HELP YOU MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE AS A MOM.
1 . Embrace Compromise : For every relationship, especially as a family, compromise is needed, that’s why I try to be fair and understanding by matching my food needs with theirs once in a while and this i achieve by ensuring we have weekly cheat days.
2 . Educate Your Loved Ones : I also never fail to educate Adam and Asher on the need to eat right so they can grow fit, strong and healthy. After all, train up a child in the way that they should go.
- Make It a Family Affair : Alongside educating the kids on why it is important to eat healthy, getting them personally interested and involved (especially if you are doing home workouts ) in fitness is essential.
Buy them kiddie gym clothes , which are usually very cute by the way, and make sure they tag along during workout sessions, especially when you are working out at home. Kids love to play so this part is very easy, and you would save yourself from all the distractions.
Once they get excited about the session , they will be the ones reminding you about workout time. So its a Win-Win .
Involving your kids in your exercise routine also helps with mother-child bonding which is very key in their emotional development.
- Plan and Prepare Meals Before Hand : Another thing which really helped me was ensuring we had food for the week prepped and ready to go. This helps a lot especially if you are working .
Mapping out breakfast, lunch and dinner in advance is sometimes the difference between eating a plate of unhealthy instant noodles, and a healthy planned option . Just because you have to whip up dinner last minute.
Meal prep is real time life saving.
I usually do our batch cooking on Sundays and store everything in the freezer in preparation for the week.
5. Remove All Junk From Sight : Removing all junk food and temptation from the refrigerator and places where you can easily grab and pop them in your mouth is key to ensuring you are not snacking and nibbling mindlessly.
- Measure Everything : Never eyeball whatever you are putting on your plate…especially if you are just starting out on this journey. Kitchen Scale and measuring cups are a must have to ensure all your hard work pays off.
Moderation Is Key : On cheat days, moderation is key. Eating junk or over indulging even for a day can set you months back on whatever progress you may have made.
- Discipline Yourself : Food is for nourishing the body , if it is not going to nourish you , then don’t eat it. Self Discipline is also very important because , although your kids may want all the candy in the world learn to not indulge by disciplining yourself.
Sustaining a healthy lifestyle as a mom may be daunting but it is absolutely doable. It’s all about balance and finding a system that works for you and your family.
